Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will my child need?

Typically a minimum of 12 sessions is recommended, although the number of sessions required is unique to each child. Counselling for children is similar to adult counselling in that both depend strongly on the construction of a trusting relationship. The child must develop a trusting relationship with the therapist where the child tells their own story without fear of judgment or interrogation, in a safe and reassuring environment.

The sessions begin with a meeting between the therapist and parent(s) or caregiver(s) to discuss concerns regarding the child. The subsequent sessions are with the therapist and child only. A brief update on the child’s progress will be provided at the end of every six (6) sessions.

Are parents/caregivers involved in the therapy?

Parental involvement is a crucial component of every child’s treatment. Parents are relied upon for information concerning the child’s development, behaviour, relationships, and habits and are closely consulted regarding goals of treatment. Parents are partners in the treatment process and the therapists rely on parents to provide critical feedback regarding the effectiveness of our interventions as they are developed and implemented.
